Top Shelf is a fabulous, 2 year old gelding ADR registered (full brother to DL Mangile's Buckle Bunny, National Champion, Best of Breed and Multiple Champion Winner) who will be 3 yo this fall of 2025. None are perfect but he is right up there. Top Shelf has a cute head, nice neck set, straight back, big nice hip and front end. Best of all he is square and on top of it loud colored. TopShelf came to us not handled and not broke to lead, (I had owned his Mother but sold her while in foal with him). With a little patience training it did not take long and he was leading. Top Shelf would trot behind my husband some. He was easy to catch, because I was no longer able to help with him due to mu health my husband Dan who is not a equine person and I decided because I had already entered him in Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo in January 2025 to take him to Bobbie Ferrao for training .
My friend and I delivered him to Bobbie and we could lead him to her barn but once inside he was afraid of the darkness and the black mats Bobbie had laid down in her barn. Bobbie got her golf cart tied him to it and pulled him into her barn on his hunches all the way. The next day we were already gone and she said after that she could not get him out the stall without the use of her golf cart. But soon he would come out without being pulled out and immediately after that Bobbie dedicated working with him almost every day to try and have him ready for Fort Worth. The Thursday before the show may husband and I went to Bobbies and we paid her for 2 hours of lessons. Again Dan had never shown before in halter, showmanship, in hand trail. But he is a quick learner and did it for me!
Dan and Top Shelf AKA: Topper (per Bobbie) both had a great first show. Dan who has never shown before (except running classes for friends) won the 2 yo gelding class. Reserve Jr Halter Champion. He won the ACOSA Gelding Class and ACOSA Grand Champion. Dan was 2nd in Non-Driving Showmanship against experienced handlers and other donkeys. Dan and TopShelf did not place in In-Hand Trail but they made it through the complete class. They received a 4th in both the Scramble and Relay. Overall it was a great show.
After returning home we made the decision to go ahead and sell him to as Show-Home because of the cold hard fact that I'm no longer healthy enough to show or even care for my donkey's myself and that it is not my husband hobby but mine. With the cost of hiring almost everything to be done for me, plus gas, training, maintenance care, show clipping costs, hotels, food was etc., etc. it was no longer feasible.
With that I advertised him and had 4 show homes inquire about him and sold him to a fabulous home in TN., where he will be shown and loved by the Vonderfecht Family. We wish them muc success with TopShelf.
